Ouran High School Host Club – episode 7

“Jungle Pool SOS”

Ridiculous to the point of sublimation, Ouran High School Host Club sets off all triggers of happiness.

The Host Club visit the Kyouya family Tropical Aquatic theme park a week before it opens, so that they may test the suitability of crocodiles for relaxation purposes. Something like that.

There’s a funniness rating and an enthusiasm in this episode that is nothing short of epidemic, despite the fact that it’s not really better than any of the others. The bonus on top of the fun is that we get some insight into the natures of Honey and Mori, which opens some unanswerable questions about “master” and “servant” blood. I suppose that exists in vampire hierarchy, but I don’t think that there truly are people born to serve.

It’s pointless to examine every single comedic aspect of this episode, though I did think that the RahXephon cosplay did draw too far back (did RahXephon have a genuine impact on Japanese audiences? When I was watching it I was focusing too much on how it was a melange of every SF idea ever), and it’s definitely pushing it to have a beach episode directly after this.

Ouran High School Host Club: undemanding, uninsulting. Top quality.

  1. I think the obscurity of the reference was kind of the point.

  2. Both Ouran and RahXephon are from the Bones studio. Quon is very likely the female in a Bones series least like Renge, so of course she’s the obvious choice for Renge to cosplay.
