Air Gear – episode 1

April 11, 2006 on 8:05 pm | In Air Gear | 20 Comments

Can we just pretend I never watched this? Thanks.

Technological advances have led to the creation of Air Trek, roller blades with the power of cars. Also they can fly and there’s an underground movement of “crazy people” who mod their Air Trek to make them faster.
Ikki lives with four girls for no reason discernible. He breaks into their secret room and takes a pair of Air Trek, meets a pink haired girl and challenges a gang of skinheads by accident (and the way he causes this challenge is by sexually harassing said pink haired girl). The “Department for the Counteraction of Delinquent Special Aviation Footwear Users” attempts to stop them, but wild hearts can’t be broken.

Okay, this is ugly (with the exception of Ringo, who is cute after a fashion, but only because she resembles Abenobashi‘s Munemune). It even has a loli, whose loliness is counteracted by her sheer hideousness and bad personality. The music is a sort of Japanese hip hop which is cool for some people but isn’t really my style.
Plus I think it’s kind of stupid, too.

Therefore I have no doubt that Air Gear will become insanely popular. Oh! Great.

  1. I vote AirGear for the worst manga to anime transition of all time. I think they just tried to compact too much of the manga into 1 episode so they can get to the good stuff, well, at least I hope there’s good stuff coming up….

  2. Just wanted to call it : Air Gear’s looks , design and plot bear a striking resemblance to those of the Jet Set/Grind Radio series.

    Except , JSR does it um…better ?

  3. Clearly Air Gear does it better because the female characters have larger breasts.

  4. You review is hideous. It’s annoying when people are to critical of an Anime. Ihaven;t read the manga, so yeah sure maybe it’s not the same.

However, as a stand alone shpw you guys are just off.

Air Gear is a great anime, with good animation and very interestign storyline. The idea of modded blades is cool alone. Maybe you guys can;t skate or have not athletic ability.

Furthermore, it’s not just rollerblading, there are “powers” involved.

A story does not unravel in 1 episode, so I don;t know wtf you were looking for.

Even Naruto took about 6 episodes to be really good.

I’d ahve to say that if there was a scale of 1-10 that rates wheteher or not you’d want to see the next episode, Air Gear scored 9 with me, as in 90% interest in seeing the next episode. Why?

    1. The art where he breaks into the room and his eyes shake. That was excellent. Really powerful.

    2. The introdution of two dark characters. That white hair police guy (Kaito), and Agito. How can you stop watching when two people like that show up in the first ep!

    3. An obvious badass rival: Spitfire, the redorange haird guy.

    4. The best part in the while episode, and pretty much the clincher to want to watch the next if not th whole series. Somewher circa 19minutes and 15seconds. The main character gets serious. You have to admit that scene was so tight.

Yes. They packed in a whole bunch in this first ep, but that made it excellent. Not to mention the Opening and Ending songs are good too. OP’s&ED’s can make or break an Anime: Gundam Seed for exmaple (of make)

I hope you don;t thikn I was tyring to be mean, but you snubbed this show without giving it a chance – and it’s really good. Well there you go. Have a nice day.

  5. Kaze: you couldn’t decide whether you were insulting me or being constructive in your argument, and so I am confused. All of the arguments that you tried to turn me with are parts of the show that I considered trite or stupid, and certainly not compelling.

Not all anime is for every comer. I’m always glad when anime I don’t like finds an audience (unless it’s really, really bad), but I don’t have to “admit” anything. I’m a busy man and Air Gear was never going to be my cup of tea.

  6. To put it plainly, Air Gear is one of those shows that I feel. . you either like it, or you completely don’t.

The premise of the story itself already decides that. Some people just won’t find the Oh Great! fanservice-y shounen storyling to be appealing, while others might be more interested.

I can honestly say that . . when I first started watching the anime, I was a bit turned off. The story seemed a bit cheesy, not to mention, it seemed to have some major shounen-stereotypes and some quirky character personalities.

But it really does get better later on (that is, if you are even remotely interested in the plot to begin with). The manga is much, much better in comparison to the anime. It details much more, and shows the parts that didn’t make the transition into the anime.

All in all though. . it’s simply up to a matter of personal opinion.

  12. Air Gear is awesome. I didn’t want to continue the anime after I watched the first episode because it was recreated pretty badly, but it got better as I continued on. The first volume of Air Gear in the manga version was a lot more interesting than the anime version. It portrayed how much of a model Ikki really was as he stood for his middle school gang; how much of a king street fighter he really was. In the anime version, however, I just felt like they made him too weak. Yet, despite the many differences in both versions, I couldn’t stop watching the anime. It’s really, really good. No matter how confusing the beginning might be, the episodes ahead clear it all out. The anime creates its own road with its amazing storyline, tickling comedic scenes, and wild imagination of having the ability to soar in the air, pulling off daring stunts towards the next obstacle with Air Treks. With emblems and kings in the story, it goes even beyond the excitement of having technological advance rollerblades; it’s all about pride. Air Gear is awesome. And I think people should give it a chance and continue watching it before they talk about how bad it is. It’s pretty breaking to see someone talk about how bad a good show is. That’s life & reality though, huh?

  14. I don’t know why I’m bothering to say this, but I watched one episode and then gave up.

  15. Kaze: actually I thought that the first naruto episode was really badass. I mean, he frickin duplicates himself and beats the shit out of the bad guy.
Alex: okay if you didn’t watch at least the second episode you fail. now to my constructive argument. yes, the people are crazy. I mean, who would want to ride them while they are faster than usual? and the loli? that is for one ep, no more. I’m not even going to say any more cause I really don’t care anymore.

  16. Do you have any idea how much anime I had to watch, and how little I watch now? I don’t have room for things like Air Gear. It’s why I only watch the backlog of stuff I paid for now.

  17. I’m going through the same thing Alex. But i usually read the manga which takes 3-5 min max. I like the manga better anyways XD.
