For all of her ditziness, at 20 Hachi has done a hell of a lot more with her life than I have.
If you haven’t piloted a robot by 14, I suppose, you’re not cut out for adventurous living …

Spoilers

Hachi spends the night with Takumi. She prays desperately that it won’t be a one night stand, but she does not tell anyone about it. Likewise, Takumi tells no one about her.

It’s becoming increasingly distressing that all of the voice overs from Hachi at the episodes’ ends imply that her life has gone on to suck greatly, and that Nana has been her only shining light. This attitude didn’t quite permeate the entire episode, but it was quite strange to imagine that she was having bad thoughts about herself even as she was having sex with Takumi.
The low self esteem of Hachi, hidden by her usually frenetic nature, is another thing of the show that I would term “heartbreaking”.
Depressing shoujo, my friends. Depressing.

The surprise of the episode was Shouji’s appearance. I’m not quite sure how these things go: would it be a salve to Hachi that Shouji is serious about Sachiko – perhaps more so than he ever was about her – or is it just a slap in the face? Of course, if Junko and Kyosuke never tell her, there’s no way that she will know. I think that is the way it should stay.

Finally, on the Hirano Aya front: she moves her head too much and it freaks the heck out of me!

Hachi, why must you make bad decisions? Why must you fill the emptiness in your life with consumerism and celebrity dreams? Because they are within your grasp, and you are a victim of the disease befalling modern society.

Poor girl.

Hachi reacts with jealousy and disappointment when she realises that Yasu once dated Reira. She goes out to get liquor with Nobu and bonds, then she drinks too much, then she realises that Shin is a gigolo, then she gets fired. This emptiness that is inside her, she realises how she can fill it, and most serendipitously: Takumi is the answer.

I am now willing to freely admit that I get annoyed each time that Hachi thinks that she has feelings for one of the members of BLAST or Trapnest. It just seems strange, like she’s some sort of limpet. She thinks that love will fill the emptiness, but it’s not love if she has to force it.

Can we really be surprised that with this shoddy attitude to life, she was fired from her publishing firm? I was actually a bit surprised that Sakagami had won, but I can’t blame her: much as I like Hachi as a person, if she was working under me I would kick her out.
Hachi doesn’t really operate on logical lines, asking Nobu if he has a girlfriend only moments after discovering that he has imagined several virtual girlfriends to give himself the illusion of love within reach. The narration reveals that it’s clear that she has registered what he’s said, but what her mouth says doesn’t back that up.

As of yet I have no stance on Hachi getting with Takumi. I liked the idea when it was innocent, but as a void filler I’m not too keen on it. Let’s see if Hachi will crash and burn; what we’ve already learned is that the lives of Shouji, Jun-chan and Kyosuke are forfeit. Hooray for bands!

Nana works because many of its revelations are not particularly surprising to the audience but they are to the characters, and that’s what matters: reaction. Well, reaction in something that’s not shounen, where it is nothing but a way to cover the lack of material on offer.

Episode end spoiler

Nana realises that her plans to finish it with Ren went entirely awry; they’re still together, more so than they have been for a couple of years. Nana decides that Hachi has done well and promises to pay her back in kind.
Due to a conversation with Junko, Hachi starts to think that maybe she likes Yasu. This leads to a fair bit of awkwardness and the realisation that not all of BLAST,

With the realisation that she didn’t spend any of her time looking at Takumi at the concert, so worried was she about Ren, it comes as little surprise that Hachi wants his autograph or something to make up for it.
The viewer can tell a few seconds in advance that what is supposed to be Yasu opening the door for Hachi is actually Takumi himself. You can tell because of his textured clothing, which I would normally hate but is pulled off well here.
“I made her cry,” says Takumi. “What do you want me to do now?”
It doesn’t really need to be said anymore, but Nana really is kind. To go above and beyond the call of friendship like that is just pure nicety. While I said up there that the revelations aren’t really that surprising, I lied: I wasn’t expecting Takumi to turn up at the apartment; in the previous episode he seemed to have a healthy distaste for the intellects of his band members. It’s nice to be proved incorrect sometimes.

So let’s throw all imaginations of Yasu love out of the window for superficial relationships with musicians we’ve never met! Yasu was never a good option for Hachi, though, because it was just a feeling brought about by the imagination that “I’ve got someone there; I’ve got to go for them.” I understand that feeling, and can’t blame someone as impulsive and romantic as Hachi for feeling that way, but I don’t buy the “reality” of the emotion. Nor does Hachi, and I’ll bet that she had forgotten the idea just as soon as Takumi walked through the door.

This was a good episode, and there were parts that I really liked. Chief among them was the recollection of Nana’s past, which goes to show that you can have a period in your life that you will always remember in a certain way, regardless of the reality of the situation: Nana’s time with Ren was always in the snow. It’s an emotional landscape rather than an actual landscape, and it works all the better for it and is worth comment.
Of course, and to use the first of many secret cliches that you will discover upon further reading, every rose has its thorns. In the case of this episode, there was one disturbingly bad cut: in one of the kitchen scenes, Hachi’s dialogue was cut off before she could finish saying “nai”. It’s not something that I see often, that level of sound engineering, so it’s worthy of note.

Overall, another fine episode of Nana. When you’re watching Nana, it’s like there’s nothing else in the world.

The continued complaints! Hirano Aya is somehow the true heroine of Nana now, popping up in the Nana’s Room section to hang around with Shizue Nana. Normally it’s not in my nature to be bitter about these sorts of things, but all I can think is “Yes, flavour of the month … make hay while the sun shines … have your moment in the spot light, your day in the sun, your fifteen minutes of fame, your drawn out cliche. I’ll be waiting.”
I like her, but … there’s just something about her. I was going to call it something, but I can’t come up with anything entertaining enough. I’ll call it “sour grapes”, on my side.

The good thing about getting another dose of Nana is that you remember how much you love it. I’ll admit that it’s not a series I think about when I’m not watching it or writing about it, but if I had the time to think about every series I was watching all the time, my head would probably explode from data overload.

In these two episodes we get more great Nana stuff. While Hachi is the more open character, Nana is the one who has the more interesting back story. Hachi is a good narrative tool for blasting thedoor to that world wide open.

Spoilers

Hachi finds out that Nana does not remember her parents and has not had a family since she was 15. Nana assures Hachi that she will answer any question, so Hachi asks the most obvious question of them all …
… then, at the Trapnest concert, more than one person is sent into emotional turmoil.

When Nana met Hachi’s family, it was exactly the sort of scene that a more stereotypical character would have reacted to with disgusted snobbery. Hachi acted with the right sort of embarrassment, but Nana proved once again that a woman can wear black and be a little tough without being a super bitch. Looking at Hachi’s family, one can see that they really are “a little bit country”: Natsuko is a traditional bold and brassy mother figure; Nao is growing to become more like Natsuko every time Hachi visits; and Hachi’s father likes to drink when he gets home from work. The only “stand out” member is Nami, notable for her ganguro appearance. It actually looks really bad, but that’s entirely the point of the ganguro look. Nami does not belong in this family, and she is the trouble maker, but that’s not to say that they don’t love her.

So Nana never experienced any of this. She’s not judgemental, though, and when she realises the motives of Hachi’s actions she’s actually touched rather than angered. Through several flashbacks we see that she was always distant from the other members of BLAST (back when it was called Bluto, which is indeed an homage to Popeye) and she couldn’t have fun just for the sake of others. It was strange, but sensical, to realise that Yasu has always been the leader of BLAST; I had it in my mind that Ren was the leader. That assumption makes little sense when I put my mind to it.

In the second of these episodes, a brief glimpse is offered of the backside of Trapnest: it’s funny to note that the leader, Takumi, doesn’t appreciate the foolishness of his band members and wants them to refrain entirely from speaking on stage. They must preserve their image! Yet Takumi is not the important thing, nor is Hirano Aya’s Reira.

No; the important party, you will find, is Ren. The quality of Nana is spoken for because we can see scenes of Ren’s reactions to events without having them related to us through the girls. Lots of series take one focus but, when necessary, Nana has not been afraid to shift to vital, interesting things happening behind the scenes. If we had not seen that Ren was going through a dilemma, I doubt that anyone would have cared. It’s simple, but essential; I would definitely have missed it were it not there.

Where are Nana and Ren going? I don’t know, but I want to. That, in addition to all of the others, is the vital ingredient for Nana‘s success.

Extra secret rant after images

I need to mention this somewhere, before the thought evaporates for all time: Reira is voiced by Hirano Aya. I am really not sure if I like Hirano Aya at all outside of her role as Suzumiya Haruhi. I think her singing voice sounds too weird, that it sold on the strength of it being a case of “Suzumiya sings!”. She has a “strange” voice, and I’m not saying that as one who loves moe. If anyone accuses me of that, I will slap them.
Interestingly enough, the next episode preview provides a “third” voice for Hirano Aya: her promo voice, which, I suppose, is ostensibly her “real” voice. In promo mode, Hirano Aya takes on the high, sickly sweet tone reserved for your lower class of idol and even goes so far as to say something as nonsensical as “pyon!”
So I don’t know what I think of her. Did KyoAni make her, or will she survive beyond the one show that wreaked havoc on the world?

Hachi needs to stop overthinking things! That way, we can have happy smiley dramatic Ren Nana reunions!

Also I think I’m in love with Shizue Nana.

End spoiler

Hachi calls Misato to apologise for her behaviour and learns from the call that Ren was once a member of BLAST. Naturally Hachi freaks out and starts formulating plans to formulate the most romantic scheme in the world.

Ren/Stage + Nana/Front Row = Eyes Meet
Eyes Meet = Tears of Joy
Tears of Joy = Love of the Century

There’s also a slightly less noble equation in play.

Hachi orchestrating love of the century = collateral sexing from Trapnest’s Takumi.

</fontsize>See, Hachi knows how to think for herself.

I really appreciated Hachi doing all of the inappropriate things at work. I understand how she feels, yet the twist that her supervisor now sympathises with her slacking is funny to a high degree. If people at my office acted like Hachi, we wouldn’t have internet access. Actually, we don’t, and it’s been like that for two years. Damn you, Hachi! Spoiling the internet for the honest people in the audience!

With her reaction to the Ren situation, she took it too far. I like Hachi more than many people, but even I can’t stomach her eternal fantasizing. I understand that she’s the focus of the show, relating most of the Nana story to us through her own perspective, but maybe if we got a little bit more of the other people it would have worked for the better. When we did get some of the other people, we got some of the other people: Ren on Yasu’s doorstep, people!

Ren’s feelings remain true! Commence the love love reunion!

I realised something terrible while watching this episode: I am Jun/Kyosuke. I have been known to be cruel to depressed people in order to help them.
When I say “people” I mean “one person”, but still.

As for the episode: lots of fourth wall breaking and a bit too much retrospection.

Kyosuke and Jun run into Shouji at Jackson Hole and make several comments pertaining to their surprise that a character so despised by the viewers would come back. Kyosuke then goes on to say that he hopes that Hachi doesn’t commit suicide, which would lead to the end of the series.

BLAST’s live goes off well, and there Hachi meets Misato. Hachi becomes the queen of jealousy as a result, despite having earlier expressed happiness at the fact that she doesn’t have any “weird feelings” for Nana.

Jun and Kyosuke were hilarious, largely because they don’t get any of their own stories and are forced to react to whatever is happening with Hachi and/or Shouji. Jun’s imagination of Hachi’s suicide was amazingly funny, with the “sayonara angel” appearing not once but twice.
When it became clear that Hachi didn’t want to commit suicide, it’s almost as if the couple wanted her to stay depressed because she’s far too genki for their deadpan natures.

I was worried about the live, but word of mouth worked well and the OP pretty much reanimated itself on the stage. The club was too smokey to appear good on screen, but the lack of clarity was for a deliberate setting of mood.

To meet Misato was another one of the show’s pleasures, as I cast my mind far into the past and remembered her face. Nana has one die hard fan, and Hachi is going to begrudge her that? Hachi is obviously far too dependent, as she can’t imagine a life without Nana. In all ways but sex (which can only be a little ways away!), Nana has taken the place of a boyfriend in Hachi’s life. Clearly this is not what Nana wants.

I didn’t like how much of this episode was spent on Hachi doing nothing and thinking about her situation, but it was totally understandable that she would do such a thing. I just am not a fan of plots based on irrationality. It’s sad to see Nana so wounded as a result.

Another mostly good episode of Nana that shows the series may suffer slightly under the weight of Hachi’s silliness. Hachi shouldn’t jeopardise the happiness she is experiencing with these people.

I’m surprised that Shizue Nana has something new to pimp with each episode.
AND it was absolutely hilarious that Hachi thought that Nana would be a top!

When Nana is good, it’s freakishly good. Normally I’ll alternate shows but I’m watching all of my episodes of this in one hit.

Spoilers inside

Nana and Hachi wait outside Jolie Mamma to meet Shouji. As Shouji had not expected to see them there, he chases Sachiko out into the street and is thus exposed.

Hachi is rendered speechless, so it’s important to note that Nana does all of the speaking for her. Then she realises, with the assistance of Sachiko, that it has not very much to do with her at all.

I’ll give Sachiko this: she is cute. She also lies to Hachi to take some of the blame for the cheating off of Shouji. When she was attempting to express her feelings for Shouji, she did not know of Hachi, so to say that she seduced him is just a diversionary tactic. You have to respect her for that, and I will upgrade her status to “semi-innocent party”.

Nana asks Hachi why she isn’t fighting for Shouji, which provoked me to think “why would she want him?” Hachi backed me up by saying “I don’t want him”. Her voice over goes on to say that she was too immature to forgive him, but I think that this part of the relationship is too far gone to be patched up. Maybe they can be friends again, maybe, but I will be incredibly angry if Shouji and Hachi get back together. I’ll be surprised if Shouji sticks around as part of the main cast, but maybe that will happen. He kind of belongs with Kyosuke and Jun, who has once again proved herself to be an incredibly unsympathetic woman. The fact that she had a point with some of what she was saying didn’t help her at all!

Nana in all out drama mode is good and now, with the introduction of Trapnest tickets, the Nana drama can commence!

A lot of ground is covered in one episode of Nana.

Same spoilers as previous episode

Shouji meets up with Kyosuke and essentially admits that he has slept with Sachiko. Despite the sickening nature of the justifications offered, Kyosuke and Junko decide not to tell Hachi on the grounds that she may just take drastic measures.

Now I think I can understand why people came to hate Shouji: he is a spineless bastard who thinks he can just go around hurting all of the women he knows. You can understand why he is hesitant to break up with Hachi (someone of her usual cheeriness can be primed for suicide), but as it is he isn’t being fair to either of them.
Shouji is looking for excuses all over the place, suggesting to Kyosuke that the reason that he does not cheat is because he is “scared of Junko”. This could not be further than the truth, and is proof that Shouji has lost sight of relationships.

The scene with Shouji and Kyosuke in the restaurant repeats in the form of Hachi and Shouji at Jackson Hole. There, Hachi complains about her problems with work. Shouji’s reaction indicates to Hachi that she is not allowed even one bad night. To him it’s another nail in the coffin of their relationship, and she blames herself entirely for his strange behaviour. This is one case where Hachi’s paranoia about the state of her relationship can be justified, yet I don’t believe it is her fault.

I think it’s important that directly after Hachi comes off this horrible dinner (her attitude to work, by the way, isentirely natural), she goes home to Nana and BLAST to find that they’ve ooked their first live. Her terrible day is capped by sharing euphoria with her friends, and once again Nana shows that the divide of its two sides is effective. One would think Nana would have the drama, but Hachi has been dealt that card and cannot get the support of her Shouji-tachi friends because the situation is too complex.
I would think that Shouji should have been able to calm Hachi and take her mind off work, but it’s clear that he simply isn’t trying any more.

I was surprised that Sachiko agreed to be “the other woman”, carefully ignoring every phone call Hachi made to Shouji to save her own feelings. That changes with a visit to Jolie Mamma from Hachi: to see the woman that you’re “stealing” from changes the situation. Shouji probably didn’t make any excuses like “My girlfriend is a fire breathing dragon bitch who wants to castrate me”, so seeing Hachi as a kind, considerate person makes it all the harder for Sachiko.
I kind of hope that Shouji ends up with no one, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

The balance of this episode was very delicate, with weird attempts to make Shouji’s problems comedic that mainly showed him up as pathetic, but all of the Nana comedy was hilarity animatified. I was really grateful for that ending up in the episode. I’m all for drama, but levity frequently helps gravity.

Hooray for shoujo drama!

It’s not really a surprise if you’ve seen the images before. This is the Nana that ends with high drama spelling out danger in episodes to come.

Spoilers beyond

Nana realises that if she’s ever going to get married she will need to have some money in the bank. She decides to put away the “marriage fund” money her mother deposited in the last (real) episode, and aims for a job with a publishing firm.
Shouji, meanwhile, decides to break off his friendship with Sachiko.

Shouji kicks himself into the abyss: the abyss of both parties knowing the wrongness of what they are doing. I can’t blame Sachiko for her tears because I’m not cynical enough to think she would be that manipulative, but I think that at least one of the two people in this situation should have had a stronger will power.
Junko may not have sided with Hachi when she was berating Shouji for stringing Sachiko along without realising it, but she most definitely would not approve of the course of action that he has decided to take.
“You knew Nana was exhausting when you decided to go out with her,” she tells him. He could at least have broken it off. That’s not to say I don’t understand that he was driven by impulse, and I’m certainly not saying that the situation is unrealistic: I’m just saying it’s wrong. I don’t really want to see Hachi break down because we’ve seen her paranoid about her relationship: imagine how awful it will be to watch her with something legitimate to worry about!

Shouji really is in a different world in the storyline, though, which makes the relationship dissolution so easy to understand. This delineation brings us to the world of Nana and Blast, the distraction that makes Hachi so happy. These scenes are an idyll that proves what Hachi says: “if she were a man, Nana would have been the love of my life. That’s how I thought back then.” Again the narration is at some far remove, and I’m really intrigued to think what has happened to change Hachi’s attitude.

Note that nothing I’ve said here is genuine criticism: just because I think something is wrong doesn’t mean I think it’s bad. Wrong is what makes stories go ’round, and Nana can only rock on from here.
(This is ignoring the people who decry any sort of emotional issues as “angst” and therefore “terrible to watch”. I’m not those people).

Hachi finds herself right out of luck, but anonymous kindness finds her. It’s the right sort of episode for sweetness and triumph of something.

Hachi has spent all of her money on frivolous things and is therefore screwed. The issue compounds itself when Mizukoshi decides to close down the store.
On the other end of things, Shouji and Sachiko look sufficiently dodgy enough to make Kyosuke worry.

Nana’s month of luck is up, and so this means that the scenes between Shouji and Sachiko are due to become more “meaningful”. Whenever Sachiko is shown, she is portrayed as a girl very clearly infatuated, rather than simply exuberant in her friendliness. One might be inclined to feel angry at Sachiko, but then the important revelation comes up: Sachiko does not know about Nana, and therefore would have seen no harm at all in flirting.
The one to blame for what is inevitably the descent to the ruin of Hachi and Shouji is, at this point in the story, Shouji. Now that Sachiko knows better, though, it’s become a two player game.

As the story has progressed, however, Shouji has become clearly less instrumental in the life of Hachi: she found a job and a cheap house with the ultimately good hearted Nana, both without his assistance. Yet the fact that Shouji has become a peripheral image does not mean that he is unimportant to her. The Great King of Terror is clearly now acting against Hachi, because Shouji had a year in which he could have fooled around, and he chooses to do it now, when it would be so easy to find out. The fact that Hachi has had her heart broken before should not be a buffer for Shouji to cause him less worry about the betrayal going on here.
The bright patch of the Komatsu parents’ anonymous generosity is going to be blotched out all too soon: I say full lesbians ahead!

Ahem. As for Nana, she’s cool. Yasu comes to Tokyo to join Blast (one of the best Japanese English portmanteux I’ve seen: the band is BLAck STones). Friends that care for each other and a community of acceptance make for sweet scenes from the character who is “supposed” to be “hardcore”. You need Nana to keep Hachi in check, because Junko, Kyosuke and Shouji clearly can’t do that. The emotion runs high in several of the Nana scenes, and that’s the way it should be. I like the frenetic energy of Hachi, sure, but I really appreciate the depth of feeling waiting to be eked from Nana.

So, while I dread Shouji’s affair, I should mention the biggest, stupidest issue of this episode: Mizukoshi’s “confession”. I hate it when, in anime and manga, a scene is set up to be a confession, and one character is convinced that it is, and the issue that needs discussion turns out to be something entirely different. It’s lazy and it isn’t funny at all. It was funny that Nana felt betrayed because Mizukoshi was leaving to get married, but these scenes can be telegraphed a mile away and the world can do without them.

All up, though, good Nana. I suspected there were rumblings of Shouji hatred, and now I can see where they’re going to come from. Break Hachi’s heart and die, punk!
